Keeping the kitchen spotless seems overwhelming due to the amount of activity in the space, from cooking to hosting family meals. It is essential to maintain a warm and healthy environment in your home, and a well-organized kitchen plays a key role in that.

However, if you have a structured routine and you stick to that, you can ensure your kitchen is always ready to go. Here is a comprehensive kitchen cleaning checklist that is divided into daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal tasks.

Small daily tasks prevent dirt and grime from building up and make it easier to keep the kitchen sparkling clean all the time.

  1. Wipe down countertops: Wipe down the countertops after every meal to remove crumbs and spills.
  2. Wash dishes or load dishwasher: Don’t leave the dirty dishes in the sink overnight as it contaminates the dishes and spreads a foul smell in the kitchen. Either load the dishwasher or wash them immediately.
  3. Clean the sink: Do not forget to disinfect or clean the sink at the end of the day.  You can use either a natural cleaning solution or a disinfectant cleaner.
  4. Sweep the floor: Have a quick look at the floor and sweep it to keep the dirt and food debris from spreading to other areas of the kitchen and the house.
  5. Take out the trash: To avoid odor and spills, try to empty the trashcan daily.
  6. Clean the stove and microwave exterior: The exterior of the stove and the microwave are full of food splatters. Therefore, wipe away the fruit splatters from the exterior.

These tasks will address areas that don’t need daily attention but still accumulate dirt and grease over time.

  1. Deep clean the microwave: Remove the turntable of the microwave and scrub away any buildup and grime inside the appliance.
  2. Mop the floors: Sweep the kitchen floor and then mop it thoroughly to deal with the stubborn spills and grime.
  3. Wipe cabinet doors: Make sure you dust the cabinet doors and clean the fingerprints that accumulate on the surfaces with a microfibre cloth.
  4. Clean appliances (toaster, blender, coffee maker): Have a look at the smaller appliances that are used regularly and wipe down the surfaces, followed by cleaning any leftover food particles.
  5. Organize pantry: Go through your pantry and discard any expired food items along with grouping similar items for convenience.
  6. Clean fridge exterior: Wipe the exterior of the fridge using a mild cleanser and a microfibre cloth. Wipe the handles, doors, and the top of the refrigerator.

Tip: “Use a lemon wedge and salt to scrub your cutting boards—it naturally disinfects and removes stains while leaving a fresh scent!”

Once a month, it’s time to dig a little deeper into areas that are often forgotten in day-to-day cleaning.

  1. Deep clean the refrigerator and freezer: Deep cleaning the refrigerator and freezer is very important at least once a month. Empty the fridge, wipe all the shelves, and drawers, and discard the expired food products.
  2. Clean the oven: Depending on how often you use it, clean your oven thoroughly to get rid of food, splatters, and grease.
  3. Wash garbage and recycling bins: Wash your garbage and recycling bins with disinfectant to avoid any unpleasant odor and dirt remaining.
  4. Wipe down walls and backsplash: Oil, grease, and food particles often land on walls and backsplash tiles. Depending on the material of your tiles, choose a suitable cleaner to make sure they are free from any dirt and grime.
  5. Clean light fixtures and ceiling fans: Dust any light fixtures and high-contact areas such as light switches, especially near the cooking areas.
  6. Descale the coffee maker: If you use a coffee machine, then run a solution of water and vinegar through it to remove any mineral buildup.

Every season, focus on those harder-to-reach areas and larger appliances that need attention less frequently.

  1. Deep clean kitchen exhaust and vents: There is a buildup of grease in exhaust fans and winds, and it is important to clean them properly at least once every six months.
  2. Defrost the freezer: To increase the efficiency and life of your freezer, defrost it seasonally if your freezer builds up ice.
  3. Inspect and clean out cabinets: Clean the cabinets thoroughly and wipe the exterior and interiors with a cleaning solution. Check for expired food and reorganize the items for your convenience.
  4. Wash windows and window treatments: To remove the dust and grease from the windows, clean the curtains or blinds, if any.
